Josh King // The Shed

Josh King kicked off his solo career with 2018’s Into the Blue, but the North Carolina-based songwriter is no newcomer. Years before packing Into the Blue with songs that mixed the breezy, backwoods bounce of Americana with the hummable hooks of guitar pop, he cut his teeth as the leader of House of Fools, an indie-rock outfit signed to the Drive-Thru Records label. The six-piece band spent years on the road, touring with acts like Jimmy Eat World and Steel Train along the way. Nearly a decade after releasing House of Fools’ final album, King returns with The Shed: a solo record that was tracked in isolation, yet is still brimmed with the collaboration and community that once filled his earliest music-making years.

The Shed began in his backyard in Greensboro, where King began gutting and refinishing a workshop left behind by the home’s previous owner. When COVID-19 brought his live performing schedule to a halt in early 2020, that workshop became more than a home-improvement project. It was a refuge. It was a makeshift recording studio. It was a place where the devoted husband and newly-minted father could take a break, block out the anxiety of the modern world, and spend a few hours in a whirl of creation. Inspired, he wrote and recorded “Man on TV,” a tongue-in-cheek folk anthem about the end of the world. Looking to expand the song with contributions from others, King sent the track to former House of Fools bandmates Jack Foster and Joel Kiser, both of whom recorded their own parts at home. Next, he solicited background harmonies from more than a half-dozen friends, asking each singer to add his/her parts remotely. By the time “Man of TV” was completed, it had been transformed into a communal track that mixed the all-hands-on-deck harmonies of “We Are the World” with the apocalyptic, rootsy pop/rock of Dawes’ We’re All Gonna Die.

The rest of The Shed took shape in similar fashion, with King writing each song at home before reaching out to his country-wide network of musician friends for their own contributions. Some of the musicians, like Tommy Scifres (from Aaron Lee Tasjan’s band) and Greg Herndon (from the Nashville-based rock act True Villains), had previously recorded with King. Others were friends he’d met on the road. Together, they created a record full of stacked harmonies, swirling keys, guitar, and pedal steel. King encouraged each musician to follow their own instincts, resulting in a meshwork of ideas and artist approaches glued together by King’s sharp songwriting and raw, honest production.

“I will follow you down this road forever,” he sings during “Side by Side,” a punchy power-pop anthem written for his wife during the months preceding the birth of the couple’s first child. That optimistic outlook turns fatalistic on songs like the swinging country-rocker “On My Own,” then swings back toward the sunnier side of the spectrum with the Elliot Smith-worthy “Brighter Days.” Diverse and collaborative,The Shed showcases not only the sheer size of King’s musical social circle, but the wide range of his writing, too.

The record is bookended by an intro and outro each of which feature his late grandfather singing and playing piano. It’s a fitting framework for an album that highlights many of the artists who’ve influenced King over the years, from his grandfather to his former bandmates to his assorted musical heroes. Created during a time of isolation, The Shed stands in defiance of solitude, loneliness, and other hallmarks of a national quarantine. This is a record about working together, one shed at a time.
