“I grew up in a really tight-knit community. Bakersfield isn’t necessarily a small town; however, it definitely has that energy. A lot of folks never leave, and this song is really based around that feeling of being trapped by your hometown,” says up-and-coming artist Jake Neuman about his hometown.

Yeah, good ol’ Bakersfield is renowned for its country music scene seventy-so years ago that called Merle Haggard and Buck Owens pioneers, yet it’s nice to hear a new name from the California desert. Although he’s now a Nashville resident, somehow, Bakersfield sounds more glamorous when describing the background of this 25-year-old.

Neuman’s vocals are built of an authoritative rasp that sounds years beyond his quarter-century on the planet. When hearing his potent song approach, the names of Jason Isbell and Zach Bryan come to mind, while his band, The Jaybird, certainly reflects the creative workmanship of the 400 Unit.

I thought it was interesting to watch that moment when what feels like such a special and perfect ‘true love’ in the early stages of a relationship moves to something that doesn’t ‘work on you anymore.’” — Jamie McLean

LA-based outfit Grand Canyon has conjured a style that feels intentionally lost in time, drawing on the touchstones of the ‘60s and ‘70s. At their emotional heights, they operate at the intersection of majestic heartland rock and Americana, recalling Springsteen’s swaggering rock style, Tom Petty’s openhearted warmth, and fellow revivalists The War On Drugs’ heady drama. After debuting in 2018 with Le Grand Cañon and following it up with their 2019 EP, Yesterday’s News, the band is back this fall with their third release, Forevermore.

The band have already shared the record’s lead single, “Heart of Gold,” and its title track, and today they’ve shared the video for “Forevermore,” premiering with Under the Radar.

With “Forevermore,” the band delivers a driving anthem, propelled forward by rollicking rhythms and expansive melodies. The band effortlessly captures the strident, defiant spirit that runs underneath Springsteen and Petty’s best songwriting, combining it with a jangling West Coast pop sensibility. Meanwhile, the lyrics capture an ascendant hopeful element, one that gives the track its own comforting warmth beneath the soaring melodies一“I’ll be your rock/I’ll free your soul/Yeah we can ride these storms forevermore/You can be my/Light in the dawn/I’ll be yours forevermore.”

Shawna Virago steps behind the bar with a gleam in her eye and fluttering eyelashes. That’s the central image nestled inside her new song “The Barman’s Daughter,” in which Virago dissects family problems from the eyes of a daughter, whose father is “still stuck acting like an extra from the film ‘The Outsiders,’” Virago explains.

The song’s subtext bursts from the trans perspective, but its innate, rambling grit gives it a universal shine. “If you’ve ever worked in a bar, you know you need to be an ambassador of peace, while practicing your boxing skills,” Virago tells B-Sides & Badlands. “In my case, I also learned to smile more and batten my eyelashes for bigger tips.
